Symptoms of lupus include joint and muscle pain, fatigue, fever, eye inflammation with dryness, a higher risk of blood clotting, kidney or heart problems, and a high risk of organ failure. Patients with lupus also have a greater risk of rashes and skin infections.

There are several types of lupus, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), discoid lupus erythematosus, neonatal lupus erythematosus, and subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The most common form of lupus, SLE, affects about 240,000 people in the US.

While doctors don’t know the cause of lupus, it is believed that genetic predisposition and certain environmental factors can trigger it. These can include taking certain drugs, getting infected with a virus, or being exposed to sunlight.
