Visit the Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam

The Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam

Whether you’re an historian or a thrill seeker, visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels offers a unique experience. It is a profound testament to endurance and ingenuity. A journey through its tangled passages leaves you with a sense of wonder and admiration for the Vietnamese people’s indomitable spirit.

The Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam stifling underground network of kitchens, hospitals, schools, armories, chambers and command centers was dug by hand without the use of modern tools. Its intricate layout allowed soldiers to live and work within the confines of the tunnels while evading Allied air bombardment and ground forces. The site also served as a base from which Communist troops launched attacks on Saigon and the rest of South Vietnam in early 1968.

With their snaking pathways, camouflaged trap doors and hidden ventilation systems, the tunnels were designed to thwart Allied bombing attacks and elude detection by American and ARVN forces. Each tunnel entrance was carefully concealed, often adorned with crafty booby traps that would kill or maim soldiers that unknowingly stumbled upon them. The tunnels’ defenders were heavily outnumbered but in the kind of close-quarters fighting for which they were trained, one familiar with the layout of the system could hold up a much larger force.

To get the most out of your visit, we recommend catching a bus from 23-9 Park or Ben Thanh Bus Station (No. 13) or No. 94 from Cho Lon / 12 Xuan Dieu and heading to Cu Chi District. We also advise to bring a comfortable pair of shoes as the trek to the tunnels can be a bit of a hike.
