A good gutter repair keeps your house safe from flooding basements and rotting porches. But sometimes your gutters can get damaged by weather or just old age. If you see signs of damage in your yard or in your garden it’s important to do gutter repair promptly. Otherwise, you’ll face water damage to your garden and flower beds, rotting fascia boards and even a flooded basement.
Clogged gutters can be a major problem because they prevent rainwater from flowing through them. This can lead to a build-up of gunk, which eventually causes the gutters to overflow. Cleaning and sealing are two easy ways to fix this problem.
How Proper Gutter Installation Protects Your Home
Cracks and fissures in the gutters can also be a sign of damage. Small cracks can be repaired with a sealant, such as Loctite PL Roof and Flashing Polyurethane Sealant, which is waterproof and resists UV radiation, corrosion and mold growth. For larger cracks, you can use metal flashing that’s nailed or glued and coated with sealant.
If the gutter is sagging it may be due to an uneven slope. To remedy this, a new gutter can be installed or the current gutter can be raised using brackets that attach to the fascia.
A leaking or flooded gutter can also be caused by an ice dam, which happens when snow melts on warm areas of your roof and refreezes on colder areas, such as the gutters. To break up the ice dam, you can use a pantyhose or tube sock filled with calcium chloride and tied off perpendicular to the gutter. The salt will melt the ice and create channels for the water to escape. If the ice dam is too large, you can hire a professional to remove it safely.
