How to Properly Prepare Your Cabinets For Professional Cabinet Painting

Whether you’re looking for a fresh coat of paint or a whole new look, hiring professional cabinet painters is the best way to ensure the job gets done correctly. They’ll understand how to properly prepare surfaces for painting, the proper number of coats to apply, and which types of paints are best suited for each surface. Additionally, they’ll use specialized tools that prevent common problems like brush strokes and uneven coverage.

Prepping

Proper preparation is key for any paint job, but especially when it comes to cabinets. Before painting, all surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned to remove any dust or debris that could interfere with the new coats of paint. In addition, all cabinets should be lightly sanded to create an even surface and to eliminate any bumps or dents. The sanding process should also be done carefully so as not to over-sand, which could result in a dull finish.

Professional cabinet painting, it’s important to use the right type of primer. Different primers are available for a variety of surfaces, including wood and vinyl. For example, for wood cabinets, a stain-blocking primer is ideal. It dries quickly and seals knots so that they don’t bleed through the topcoat. For vinyl or plastic surfaces, a high-hiding acrylic primer such as Fresh Start is a good choice. It offers maximum hiding power, protects the surface and suppresses stains, as well as provides mildew resistance.

The final step is to apply a few coats of color and then a clear topcoat for protection and moisture resistance. Some companies will also apply a glaze to add additional depth and color, which can be particularly effective on older cabinets.
